Hebrew is, according to all opinions, among the most ancient of languages on the planet. Similarly, it
is held by many to be the oldest written language on Earth, if not an immediate descendent of the oldest. It was in
the Hebrew language that the Torah was given to Moses; And it was in the Hebrew language that the vast majority of the
rest of the Bible was written.
Although it need not be said that one can know the Creator, have a 'relationship' with Him, and live upright
before Him without knowing Hebrew, one who does not know Hebrew will find this much more tough than it needs to be.
He may not even realize how tough of a time he is having in fulfilling G-d's commands, because he may be ignorant of some
great mistakes which are due to his misunderstanding the Bible. This is most likely due to his lack of
knowledge of Hebrew. No matter how accuate the Bible translation, there can never be a translation that fully expresses
all that exists in the original Hebrew form. Therefore it is very worthwhile to at least learn the very basics
of Hebrew.
"If I were younger I would want to learn this language [i.e. Hebrew],
for without it one can never properly understand the Holy Scripture…. For that reason they have said correctly: 'The
Jews drink out of the original spring, The Greeks drink out of the stream flowing out of the stream, The Latins, however,
out of the puddle.'"
--Martin Luther (1483-1546)
